SOY CUBA

Directed by MIKHAIL KALATOZOV/Cuba/Soviet Union/1964/148mins.

With Sergio Corrieri, Salvador Wood, José allardo

This Soviet propaganda film masterfully directed by Mikhail Kalatozov presents a visually compelling indictment of the Batista regime, and a justification of the Cuban revolution in 1959. The stunning black-and-white cinematography of the film rivals that produced by the Soviet Union’s most famous director, Sergei Eisenstein.

“Cinema’s singular dream, so often betrayed elsewhere, is to deliver such visions as this”-Time Out

“Some of the most exhilarating camera movements and most luscious black and white cinematography you’ll ever see inhabit this singular, delirious 141-minute communist propaganda epic.”

-Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader

The film will be introduced by Frank Luca, Chief Librarian and Adjunct Professor of History, The Wolfsonian–FIU
