Félicité is a proud, free-willed woman working as a singer in a bar in the Congo’s capital Kinshasa. Her life is thrown into turmoil when her 14-year-old son gets into a terrible car accident. To raise the money to save him, she sets out on a breakneck race through the streets of electric Kinshasa – a world of music and dreams. Grand Jury Prize winner at the Berlin International Film Festival, FÉLICITÉ is also an official selection at the Toronto International Film Festival and New York Film Festival, and is this year’s official entry for Senegal for Best Foreign Language Film for the Academy Awards. (In Lingala and French with English subtitles)

OFFICIAL SELECTION: Short List for Foreign Language Academy Award

WINNER: Grand Jury Prize, Berlin International Film Festival

New York Film Festival

“Félicité is also an artist, someone who skillfully and instinctively channels her feelings into song. And so it’s fitting that music should become the movie’s emotional filigree, ranging from the band’s jubilant jam sessions to the heart-stopping occasional interludes featuring the Kinshasa Symphony Orchestra, performing their renditions of Arvo Pärt in an enormous warehouse space. The mix of improvisation and classicism goes beyond mere eclecticism. It reflects the movie’s own generous embrace of life in its endless capacity for joy, sorrow and awe.”-Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times
