“Lights, Camera, Deco!”

Museum-and-a-Movie Series

In collaboration with the Wolfsonian-FIU

The Wolfsonian–FIU and Miami Beach Cinematheque are teaming up for a summer of art and film with an Art Deco spin! From drama to cult horror and even a musical romance, we’re bringing you Tinseltown talkies from the 1930s to look at how some of Hollywood’s heavyweight directors Deco-fied their elegant, streamlined sets. Join us on select Sundays for a 4pm guided tour of Deco: Luxury to Mass Market at the museum, followed by a perfectly paired film screening at 5pm across the street at the theater.

Directed by EDMUND GOULDING/1932/1hr 52min

With Greta Garbo, John Barrymore, Joan Crawford

GRAND HOTEL souvenir program, USA, 1932. #MBCarchive

The first in our Deco film series is Edmund Goulding’s 1932 film Grand Hotel, a pre-Code, Berlin-based film. Originally conceived as a novel and then a play, this black-and-white classic features a day of Art Deco drama as the six main characters experience theft, lust, gambling, and death. Stop by The Wolfsonian for a 4pm tour of Deco: Luxury to Mass Market before taking in the film’s iconic Cedric Gibbons set design at the Cinematheque at 5pm.

A 4pm tour of the Wolfsonian-FIU exhibition
