“Lights, Camera, Deco!”

Museum-and-a-Movie Series

In collaboration with the Wolfsonian-FIU

The Wolfsonian–FIU and Miami Beach Cinematheque are teaming up for a summer of art and film with an Art Deco spin! From drama to cult horror and even a musical romance, we’re bringing you Tinseltown talkies from the 1930s to look at how some of Hollywood’s heavyweight directors Deco-fied their elegant, streamlined sets. Join us on select Sundays for a 4pm guided tour of Deco: Luxury to Mass Market at the museum, followed by a perfectly paired film screening at 5pm across the street at the theater.

FLYING DOWN TO RIO

Directed by THORTON FREELAND/1933/1hr 29min

With Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Dolores del Rio, Gene Raymond

FLYING DOWN TO RIO Danish program, 1933. #MBCarchive

Some say it’s a masterpiece, others claim it was an elaborate advertisement for Pan-Am. In the second film of our Deco series, Thornton Freeland’s 1933 musical Flying Down to Rio, a young couple explores a complicated attraction first in Miami, and then in the air. With the debut pairing of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, some in-flight piano playing, and an aerial ballet with chorus girls, Flying Down to Rio is sure to impress. Learn about Streamline Moderne through a 4pm tour of Deco: Luxury to Mass Market at The Wolfsonian before experiencing Flying Down to Rio at the Cinematheque at 5pm.
