THU, FEB 13, 7p:

Directed by VERA CHYTILOVÁ/Czechoslovakia/1966/1hr, 14mins.

DAISIES German program, 1966. #MBCarchive

In the wildest and craziest film of the Czech New Wave, director Věra Chytilová uses feminism as the power of revolution. Best friends Marie I and Marie II decide to tackle all that is wrong with the world, and succeed, at least in their own world.

(In Czech with English subtitles).

“Maybe the New Wave’s most anarchic entry, Věra Chytilová’s absurdist farce follows the misadventures of two brash young women. Believing the world to be “spoiled,” they embark on a series of pranks in which nothing—food, clothes, men, war—is taken seriously. Daisies is an aesthetically and politically adventurous film that’s widely considered one of the great works of feminist cinema.”-Criterion Collection
