THE RED AND THE WHITE

(Csillagosok, katonák)

Directed by MIKLÓS JANCSÓ/Hungary/1967/1hr, 30mins.

THE RED AND THE WHITE Yugoslavian poster, 1967. #MBCarchive

With a stark style similar to that elaborated upon by Russian Andrei Tarkovsky, director Miklós Jancsó creates one of the most poetic anti-war films of all time. During the Russian Civil War of 1917, the Communist Hungarians help the Reds (the Bolsheviks) fight the Whites (the Czarists), and help prove through a series of actions that war is an endless parade of unanswered questions.

(In Hungarian and Russian with English subtitles)
